October is here. Not only does that mean pumpkin spice, haunted houses and amazing Disney throwbacks, it also means flu season is coming. There’s nothing worse than getting sick and missing a workout when you’re trying to get your six-pack for Halloween. Good thing there are ways to keep up with your fitness goals when fighting a cold. 

 Should you still work out when you have a cold? If you just have a simple head cold, you do not necessarily have to skip your workout. You’re so close to reaching your goal — most of the time I find that if I work out, I actually feel better because I am sweating out my sickness. Also, going in the sauna after a workout when your nose is stuffy feels amazing. 

 Exercising boosts your immune system. If you have a head cold, maybe do 30 minutes of cardio or try to do a light arm workout, something to get your body moving and your heart rate up. Obviously, you don’t want to push yourself if you really don’t feel up to it. According to Women's Health Magazine, you should not exercise if you have a cough, shortness of breath, body aches, chest congestion or a fever. 

 What should you be eating? Well, having a cold makes it easier to focus on what you’re eating. When you’re sick, you need to fuel your body with tons of fruits and veggies. Try to stay away from the sugary drinks that make you “feel better” like Gatorades or ginger ale. Put lemon in your water instead of giving in. 

 One of my favorite ways to feel better when I’m sick is drinking a simple hot water with lemon. It makes me feel refreshed and clears my sinuses. Try to mix in more fish, zinc-rich foods and of course chicken noodle soup. Stay hydrated and have tons of fluids. 
 
No one wants to be sick during the best time of year. So take care of your body, take a multivitamin, keep a well-balanced diet and stay active!
